Who We Are

GHealth Austin is a health science education organization dedicated to helping GED students achieve their educational goals, improve their health literacy, and live longer and healthier lives. GHealth started out of the Health Leadership Apprentice Program at Dell Medical School and is a sponsored student organization at UT Austin. Dell Med's sponsorship of GHealth enables us to work with experts and increases our impact. Our team of 35 student volunteers from UT and St. Edward’s University attend weekly shifts at the LifeWorks center to tutor GED students in health and life science topics tested on the GED and other High School Equivalency tests.

GHealth has created a health science curriculum using resources from the American Heart Association and UT’s Faculty Innovation Center. Our curriculum incorporates hands-on activities for each topic to teach concepts in an engaging and effective way. For instance, we are working with the American Heart Association to train GED students in CPR while they learn about the cardiovascular system. This gives the students important health skills, helps them understand concepts for their exams, and gives them valuable experience to expand their educational and employment opportunities.

Our Goal

Your gift will help us purchase materials for hands-on activities. Hands-on activities can offer students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of otherwise-difficult topics and give them experience in collaborative learning, an important aspect of high school and college classes. Integrating these activities into the classes will help many of the kinesthetic and visual learners in the LifeWorks classes understand and share important health science concepts, helping them and their communities live healthier lives. By funding supplies like anatomical models and sphygmomanomenters, your gift will help us teach human body systems and demonstrate the function of the cardiovascular system to address important health issues like blood pressure and hypertension.

In addition to in-class activities, your contribution will help us organize fun events for the GED students, like a STEM Day on the UT campus. These events will include activities like campus tours, science demonstrations, and talks given by professors, students, and alumni. By introducing them to the university environment, we hope to support and encourage their transition from earning their GED to pursuing higher education.
