Supporting Research in Comprehensive Care

About Us

We are the Comprehensive Care research team at Dell Medical School. We are a growing team, largely depending on student volunteers from both the USA and abroad. Our team includes physicians, international PhD-students, international short-term students, medical students, and undergraduates.

Our endeavors are directed at improving patient outcomes and overall health in our society through both technical and nontechnical advancements. For instance, when a person breaks their wrist, we need to identify the type of injury, the role of surgery, the technical skills and devices needed, and the technical pitfalls. We also will benefit from optimal communication strategies to build a trusting and therapeutic relationship, optimal tools and strategies for helping people choose options consistent with their values and not clouded by misconceptions, and the best methods for identifying and addressing the psychological and social determinants of illness. For instance, a person that breaks their wrist may recover more slowly if they have substantial symptoms of depression or less effective coping strategies such as substantial catastrophic thinking. We seek to evaluate, teach, and disseminate care that accounts for individual values and circumstances.

Our Work Includes

• Clinical research, quality improvement, and program development.
  • We work with several Austin orthopedic, trauma, plastic, and spine surgeons on projects involving improving quality, safety, and effectiveness of treatment, patient-clinician relationships, safe and effective alleviation of pain, and other important aspects of getting and staying healthy.

    • Learn about musculoskeletal medicine by understanding the ailments of prominent athletes
    • Get information about medical statements that seem questionable

As a growing team of student volunteers, our budget is extremely limited and our international collaborations rely heavily on the funding we receive. In order to continue a productive exchange between countries we need alternative funding mechanisms including crowd funding.
