Centex 2017

Ultimate frisbee is a dynamic sport played by two teams on a 120 yard field with two end zones that are 25 yards deep. The game is played until one team scores a certain number of point, generally around 13 or 15. At the beginning of the point, seven players from each team line up in opposite the end zones. The point is initiated when the defensive team throws the disc to the offensive team from the end zone, this first throw is called the pull. The offensive works the disc down field by passing the disc from one player  to another until the disc is caught in the end zone at the opposite end of the field from where the team started. Players are not allowed to run with the disc and must establish a pivot foot after catching the disc. If at any point a blocked or not completed the disc is turned over to the opposing team.

Texas Women's Ultimate was founded in the spring of 2000. The program was made one team with about ten women. Sixteen years later, the program has 45 women and two teams: Melee, the more competitive team (featured above), and Mayhem the secondary team. Last season Melee finished 9th at nationals, and Mayhem finished 7th at sectionals (featured below).

For 13 years, Texas Women's Ultimate has hosted a tournament called Centex. This tournament is the pride of the program, and allows the program to showcase its spirit and Texas hospitality to the attending teams. Over the years, Centex has grown into the largest college women's ultimate tournament in the nation, and has become increasingly more competitive. Last year, nearly 50 teams from across the country attended. Melee, UT's more competitive team, won the tournament for the first time in program history. Overall, Centex showcases the growth of ultimate as a sport and how opportunities for women athletes have expanded. As the size of Centex grows, UT Women’s Ultimate relies more on community volunteers help to insure the quality of the tournament meets the high standards set in the past. With more donations, we can better compensate our volunteers and continue to provide the best experience which includes individual player packs, Texas-themed mementos, barbecue, field food, and athletic trainers.
