39th ILASSA Conference: Latin Americas at a Crossroads

For the past 38 years, The Institute of Latin American Studies Student Association (ILASSA) has organized the longest running student organized conference on Latin America in the country. The ILASSA Conference offers students from multiple disciplines at UT Austin as well as other institutions in the United States and abroad the opportunity to present their research in the style and atmosphere of an academic conference. Hosting the conference gives ILASSA a unique opportunity for leadership and a chance to share that special Austin and LLILAS warmth. This academic year we are planning for the 39th Annual ILASSA Conference that will take place in the Spring of 2019.

The conference theme for this year is "Latin Americas at a crossroads: Rethinking Methods, Languages, and Generations." We are expecting the attendance of 100 guests including a keynote speaker from Guatemala, panelists, and participants from UT Austin, other institutions in the United States, and around the globe. Your contribution will greatly support our efforts in producing a conference that students and scholars will deeply be impacted by. Given the current sociopolitical climate across the globe and in particularly in Latin America, it becomes necessary to forge new connections and solidarities between different cultures, knowledges, and life projects. The particular context of Latin America and the U.S. can be defined by its diversity. At the same time such variety has the potential to construct other worlds based on social justice and equality. The latter requires us to push and cross borders in order to build bridges with others, and to build connections at different levels. In this sense, we look forward to use the conference as a space to question practices and normalized discourses and to dispute binary conceptions of gender, politics, sexuality, immigration, etc. In other words, the ILASSA student conference has been a space for sharing experiences and constructing knowledges. Thus, this edition convenes diverse groups of people from different locations and disciplines to challenge our ways of thinking, building connections and networks, and pushing ourselves to grow as individuals and as as a community of learners.

What is ILASSA? We are the longest running student organizations at UT Austin. ILASSA is a graduate student organization affiliated with the prestigious Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) at UT Austin. ILASSA was created to encourage LLILAS students to actively take part in issues concerning Latin American Studies not only in LLILAS but also in campus affairs, and to provide a voice in the direction of the LLILAS program as well.
