Who We Are
Texas Taekwondo is a RecSports club committed to training students in Olympic-style taekwondo sparring. We encourage growth, discipline, and a healthy lifestyle in our community of athletes, students, coaches, and alumni. We come from diverse backgrounds and majors, but we are all dedicated to improving the taekwondo community here at the University of Texas at Austin. We provide all our college and high school athletes with the opportunity of competing at many different tournaments in preparation for National Collegiates, and to further impact the Austin community, we run a volunteer program called Kicks 4 Kids within our club that promotes physical health, sportsman-like conduct, healthy competition, perseverance, and leadership to young children through the practice of taekwondo.
Texas Taekwondo was founded in 1997 and started with only a small handful of students. Last year our club hit a record of 100 members, and we are still growing. Since 2001, we’ve been competing at National Collegiates every year despite never winning a team trophy. However, through our dedication and fighting spirit we won the 2018 National Collegiate Championships with 19 sparring medalists and 3 team trophies! We were shocked by our unprecedented win and learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and having the right community support us every step of the way.
Our first team win! Congratulations to our 2018 medalists Adan, Danica, Patricia, Karla, Danielle, Sathvik, Madeline, Luisa, Rachel, Nihar, Alex, Ecequiel, Antony, Kathryn, Khiem, Juan, Anna, Harsh, and Jenny, and thanks to the rest of the team for their support and hard work at practice!
Our Goal
The National Collegiate Taekwondo Association has contacted us before asking if we wanted to host one of their national tournaments, but year after year, we have had to reject their offer to host, as we have not had enough funds to take on the project. But after sweeping the podiums in the 2018 tournament, it is our dream to be able to host the 2019 competition right here at the Forty Acres, which is why we need your help. Your donations will be able to help us pay for Daedo scoring systems and equipment, signage and marketing, hiring officials, judges, and medics, providing their meals, and other various costs that go into hosting such a large tournament.
Being able to host National Collegiates would be an incredible honor and wonderful experience for our team and a gift to both the UT and Austin community, but we can’t do it without your help.
Our hardworking coaches (left to right): Coach Daniel, Coach Mike, Head Coach Joe, and Coach Martin. And in the middle is our team captain, Adan Rivas, who is training to become an Olympic athlete fighting for Team USA!
