Longhorn Powerlifting was established in the 1980s and has maintained its presences at the University of Texas to this day. A competitive sport club under the division of Recreational Sports, Longhorn Powerlifting (LPL) competes at local and national level competitions through the USA Powerlifting (USAPL) federation. Our team’s annual competitions are the Collegiate Cup in San Antonio in the fall semester, the Aggie Showdown in College Station during the early spring, and Collegiate Nationals hosted in various locations. We have been fortunate to have had Collegiate Nationals in Texas the past 2 years having been hosted in San Antonio and College Station respectively. This year 2019 Collegiate Nationals will be held at Ohio State University.
Powerlifting is not sanctioned by the NCAA nor the Olympics although there has been a recent push by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a new Olympic sport. Thus with no recognition by the NCAA, many university powerlifting clubs such as Longhorn Powerlifting must depend upon their own efforts to fund items such as travel, entry fees, and equipment.
For the past few years, LPL was able to host practice in the weight room used by the weight training classes in Darrel K. Royal Stadium thanks to the relationship longtime LPL coach and supervisor Dr. Kimberley Beckwith had with the Kinesiology Department. Due to issues beyond our control, the weight room known as DL8 had to be immediately shut down at the end of the 2018 Spring semester. This forced not only weight training classes to relocate, but the entire 70-80 annual roster of the LPL team to scramble and have to find a new practice facility for the following year. To top it off, much of equipment used in DL8 was owned by other departments and not the club leaving the club practically empty handed.
Our goal through this crowdfunding campaign is to help us buy lacking and necessary equipment for our team practices. There are a few racks and bars that are teammates and will only be around temporarily so it is essential LPL purchases their own equipment to have for future Longhorn Powerlifters to use. Powerlifting meets hosted by us will also see the benefit of this equipment and will not only be for team practices.
Your support will help us establish a foundation for LPL so we can move forward on other goals such as creating an endowment for LPL members along with the possibility of hosting a National Meet. Longhorn Powerlifting and its members is thankful for any amount of support and generosity you are willing to provide.
Thank you & Hook ‘Em!
Small weights add up! This donation will help us purchase a pair of 1.25 kilogram weights or count towards another set.
Just because you can (roll wraps by hand), should you? Our team wraps rollers were lost in the move from DL8, so we need to replace them. A donation of this amount will save our equipped lifters’ forearms for heavy lifting.
Heavy weights just feel better when loaded on a nice bar. At the moment our team has limited quality bars at our disposal, putting us at risk of injury and discomfort. Donate at this level to take some of the weight off our backs.
Perfect practice makes perfect. Training on a competition caliber bench helps us to translate our hard-earned arches and precise set-ups into competition personal records. This donation buys a large piece of equipment for the team!
A large team of really strong people requires a LOT of heavy weights for efficient practices! A donation of this amount will stock one platform for practice and enable us to rent less plates when we host meets.
