Our First Gen Initiative HornRaiser campaign is now in it's last 4 days of fundraising! It has been so exciting and heartwarming to see all of the generous donations coming in from our fellow First Gen peers and supporters. We've been blown away by your support and we cannot stress this enough - thank you!
Currently at 41%, we are now almost at the halfway mark to our goal! Take a look at one of our first-gen student ambassadors that you helped support.
Lizeth Badillo is a junior from Guanajuato, Mexico majoring in Sociology, Psychology, and Latin American Studies! During her first two years at the University of Texas at Austin, she didn't know or see many other students who had similar identities as her or related to her situations. She found that many first-generation students face having unique economic, interpersonal, and familial/emotional situations that they have to navigate outside of the standard workload taken by traditional students. She wants to ensure that her fellow first-generation peers feel validated in their unique struggles and know that they have a community on campus that can relate. Lizeth feels like the greatest benefit of this program is making meaningful connections between students who have gone through the process and incoming students who are new to it while building a community of affirmation. Her advice to other first-gen students is: "Find a community of students that validate you, your experience, and uplift you in times of worry or need in the way that only those who face a similar struggle as you are able."

Janae Sparks is a junior majoring in government from Houston, Texas. During her first two years at the University of Texas at Austin, she didn't know many people who were also first-generation students. It wasn't because those people were not here, but rather she didnt' know where to find them. She wants to make sure that other first-gen students don't feel lost, alone, or don't have someone with background in their circle. Janae feels like the greatest benefit of this program is knowing that as first-gen students, they have a safe space where they can depend on and help each other. Her advice to other first-gen students: "Make that first move, challenge yourself, remain true to you!"

College is the first step for many first-generation students to change the story of their lives. Thank you for supporting the initiative’s goals, and efforts of first-generation students.
Your donation will help build a dynamic learning community where first-generation students can self-select many learning opportunities based on their desire to participate.
$100 can help provide opportunities for first-generation students to explore research and leadership opportunities.
Your donation will provide 100 individual meal cards at UT sponsored dining facilities that serve balanced meals for students experiencing food insecurities.
A donation of $500 can give a scholarship to a first-generation mentor/ambassador
Giving students the tools (textbooks, laptops, or ipad) to succeed in their academic classes
Your donation will help the Initiative Program create a student learning community space for first-generation students so that they may have the chance to study and develop relationships with each other.
Investing into a first-generation student will not only impact their immediate family but will also make a profound and significant impact on their future.
