Blast off - UT Saxophones to NASA!

The University of Texas at Austin Saxophone Studio will be well represented at the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) Biennial Conference at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The UT Saxophone ensemble, comprised of all saxophone majors at the Butler School of Music, under the direction of Dr. Stephen Page, was invited to a featured performance at this the international conference. The full range of the saxophone family, from Soprano to Bass, is used in the ensemble, which in itself varies in size from eight to eighteen players. The ensemble performs without a conductor and completely from memory, resulting in exceptionally engaging performances both aurally and visually. This is the first time the UT Saxophone Ensemble will play at the NASA Biennial conference.

In addition to the ensemble performance, the UT Saxophone Studio has garnered further acclaim through the NASA competitions. The Graduate Saxophone Quartet was selected as one of 20 Semi-Finalist in the NASA Quartet Competition, from a field of over 100 entrants. Furthermore, two graduate students, Nathan Mertens (DMA) and Gilbert Garza (MM), were counted among 26 Semi-Finalist  chosen for the NASA Solo Competition, from a field of 110 applicants. This is the first time in the 40 year history of NASA that representatives from UT have been invited to compete.

It is clear that the saxophone studio, the Butler School of Music, and The University of Texas at Austin will be well recognized at this important international conference. The UT Saxophone Studio is quickly becoming one of the strongest saxophone studios in the country, and opportunities such as these are paramount to the continued success of the studio.

Your donations will assist students in paying for registration, transportation, and lodging while attending the NASA conference. Should we surpass our fundraising goal, these contributions will help make further performance endeavors possible, such as the studio's (tentative) performance at the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago this December. Without your generous support we would not be able to show the international saxophone community what happens here, at The University of Texas at Austin! After all, "What starts here changes the world"!

Thank you for your support!  Hook'em!!
