An Expanded Vision for Eye Care in Central Texas

Your gift today will help celebrate the opening of UT Heath Austin's Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute clinic. It will provide outstanding medical care, make new research discoveries, and train current and future ophthalmologists.

Clear eyesight changes our everyday lives.

Through modern eye care, a child no longer squints to see the front of her classroom. A man feels confident crossing the street without assistance. A woman receives eyedrops that prevent blindness.

Dell Medical School’s Department of Ophthalmology and the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute envision a future when every Central Texan has access to the eye care they need. Building on the strong foundation of community ophthalmologists and the research and education acumen at The University of Texas at Austin, we strive to further establish Austin’s reputation as a destination for specialized eye care. As our clinical practice gets up and running, you can help provide the flexible funding we need to achieve better eye care for all.

Your support today will expand our impact on Central Texans tomorrow. Gifts will help us:

  • Provide outstanding eye care — to any Austinites in need — through the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute clinic opening at UT Health Austin on Nov. 2.
  • Make new discoveries which improve diagnosis and treatment by leveraging UT Austin’s research excellence in biomedical engineering, advanced computing, artificial intelligence, the neurosciences and more.
  • Train the current and next generation of ophthalmologists through grand rounds, community partnerships and future residency and fellowship programs.

With your support, we can transform the way the world sees — one patient, discovery and future physician at a time.

Jane C. Edmond, M.D., is the inaugural chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and director of the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute — and a proud UT Austin alumna. She is a national expert and educator specializing in pediatric ophthalmology and pediatric neuro-ophthalmology.

Eileen C. Bowden, M.D., specializes in glaucoma conditions and care. A UT Austin graduate, she is thrilled to return to the Austin and Longhorn community.

Eric L. Crowell, M.D., MPH, specializes in ocular immunology and uveitis diagnosis and treatment. He is also a UT Austin alumnus and excited to provide care alongside a team of fellow Texas Exes.

The Wong Family - Mitchel Wong, M.D., Rose Wong, Shannon Wong, M.D., Betty Wong and their families made a transformational gift in 2016 to establish the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute, a center to train future ophthalmologists and provide patients with the best medical and surgical eye care possible. The Institute’s clinic opens in November.
