The Impact Factory is tackling longstanding social problems—like poverty, hunger and homelessness—in bold, new ways.  A first-of-its-kind collaboration, The Impact Factory at the University of Texas fosters civic innovation, entrepreneurship and service learning beyond the classroom.

What We Do

The Impact Factory harnesses the power of cross-sector partnerships, research and business tools to launch and scale innovative programs alongside UT Austin students and build an evidence base and talent pipeline for civic impact.

Prototyping

Examples of projects in The Impact Factory’s portfolio, all founded by UT Austin students, include:

  • GoodApple is a doctor-prescribed grocery delivery company fighting food insecurity.  During COVID-19, Good Apple launched “Stay Home, Stay Healthy,” delivering 750,000+ pounds of healthy food directly to the doorsteps of 21,000+ older adults and people with weak immune systems in Central Texas.
  • Big & Mini is a videoconferencing platform matching seniors and teens to bridge generations and combat loneliness. Featured by the Today Show, the nonprofit has screened, trained and matched 1,100+ pairs in all 50 states and 25 countries since launch in April 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Early Bird is a scholarship fund and rewards program for babies born into families experiencing poverty in Central Texas.  As Early Bird families achieve healthy milestones, such as attending doctor appointments and signing up for pre-kindergarten, babies receive scholarships in tax-advantaged 529 college savings accounts.

Teaching

The Impact Factory equips tomorrow's change-makers with the knowledge, skills and networks they need to tackle longstanding social problems. We offer experiential learning programs, fellowships, and formal courses to students such as Impact Corps. This project deploys UT Austin students, equipped with training in human-centered design and civic entrepreneurship, alongside partner community organizations for real-world, hands-on experience building and launching innovations for community impact.
