Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is Power (KIP) is a video-based health education initiative to promote health empowerment among Rohingya refugees, a population currently residing in the world’s largest refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Our pilot program involves the creation and distribution of animated health videos in the Rohingya dialect that provide accessible and practical health education on high-risk medical issues faced by the population with the ultimate goal of decreasing the mortality burden of preventable disease.

Given that 73% of Rohingya refugees self-report as being unable to read and 62% have difficulty receiving verbal information due to language barriers, it is vital that information be presented to the Rohingya in their own dialect, in an audio-visual format.

Our passionate team of undergraduate students have worked for nearly a year designing each project component, establishing strong connections with local and international non-profits, and creating relationships with the Rohingya communities we will be serving.

Funds will help initiate our project by supporting the video production, on-ground distribution, and evaluation stages of our project. Within the Rohingya camps, there has been no prior audio-visual program providing Rohingya-language health education. Receiving funding would be the catalyst to kickstarting the first video-based health education program in the Rohingya dialect and provide us the necessary tools to initiate the next generation of social impact.

By supporting our project, donors will be making tangible change in improving the lives of the most persecuted population in the world. Our initiative’s nonprofit and academic connections may facilitate future UT-Bangladesh cooperation. This project could lead to study-abroad programs, internships, and jobs for UT students.
