4th Annual BME Retreat

For the fourth year in a row, the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Student Society is planning our department-wide retreat! This annual event provides an opportunity for BME graduate students, researchers, and faculty to come together and foster communal growth outside of the laboratory. After an unprecedented™ year of zoom meetings and halted research progress, this event is a safe way for us come together again and get the new semester off to a great start! Please consider donating to help us put together the great event we have envisioned!

The catered event will feature graduate student poster presentations, research discussions, an invited keynote speaker, and some much needed time to improve mental health away from the lab! Every year, this is an amazing opportunity for graduate students to share their progress and get excited about the groundbreaking work their friends and colleagues from around the department are doing. Poster presentations allow students to share their accomplishments and develop their communication skills in a low-stress environment. Not only is it a chance for members of the BME community to discuss what they are passionate about, but it is also a great way to increase collaboration and interactions between labs and researchers that would otherwise never come together. As the first event of the new year, it is also the best opportunity for the department to welcome the new cohort of students and get them excited about their future at UT BME.

This year we hope to bring another guest speaker to discuss interesting topics and ideas that members of the community can integrate in to their lives. In years past, speakers have focused on important topics like health equity and work-life balance so we are excited to invite another keynote speaker that everyone can appreciate and learn from. We believe that students, faculty, and staff overwhelmingly appreciate a break from their day-to-day responsibilities and would love a bit of normalcy as we rebound from a tough year. So, please donate and help us put on our greatest event yet!

$5

Cell

Many students in BME conduct research at the level of individual cells with some going even smaller to and focusing on the molecular level. They would be the first to tell you that even the smallest change can have a big impact.

$15

Tissue

If the average animal cell is 15 micrometers in diameter, that means you could fit more than a million on your fingernail!

$78

Organ

Did you know that humans have 78 different organs?

$206

Organ System

Your bones make up the skeletal organ system. A human adult has 206 different bones!

$500

Organism

Humans produce more than 500 billion red blood cells everyday!
