HBSA : Dia De Los Muertos Festival

Texas HBSA has committed to raising $6,000 for our Día De Los Muertos festival coming up on November 1st! This project is an important way for us to extend our community to the broader UT student community, and we need YOUR help to do that! Please consider donating to our project to help support us on our road to the festival, or show your support by becoming an ambassador on the tabs above this description. Below we have outlined a little more of who we are and our project.

Thank you :) - The Hispanic Business Student Association

Who We Are?

Hello! We are the Texas Hispanic Business Student Association at the University of Texas at Austin. We are a student organization made up of mainly Hispanic/Latinx students looking to help each other grow our professional skills and experiences. Texas HBSA is committed to bringing out the best of its 180+ members and provide them with unparalleled professional and leadership opportunities. Through the numerous programs HBSA hosts throughout the year, including our signature events, Company Night and Scoring Careers, HBSA has helped increased the number of Hispanic/Latinx professionals entering the workforce. We are also adamant about fostering family and community within our organization to make sure that all our members feel included and have a strong support group that will support them throughout their career.

Our Project

HBSA is excited to announce that we are planning to host our Día de los Muertos Festival this November, 2021! El Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated in remembrance to the dead and their passing to the afterlife, in which family and friends gather at the resting spot s of their loved ones and build altars to pray at and honor. This celebration is not meant to be a somber one, but instead a colorful festivity meant to attract the souls of the dead so they may hear the prayers of their loved ones. This holiday is celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November, and is an important event for many people of Latinx/Hispanic background. This is why the Hispanic Business Student Association decided to host our first Día de los Muertos festival 2 years ago on November 1st of 2019. We invited over 15 Latinx/Hispanic student orgs on campus to run booths, perform, and celebrate with us, all tied together by a large altar at the center of Greg Plaza where everyone was welcome to make an ofrenda for their passed loved ones. This event was incredibly successful, and we would like to bring it back again for the year of 2021. It will be largely similar with multiple student orgs collaborating and with different festivities for everyone to enjoy. This festival is an important opportunity for us to showcase some our beautiful cultural traditions and for everyone on campus to have the opportunity to partake in our culture.

How Can You Help?

We are expecting to celebrate our culture with over 2000 people from all different walks of life. We have committed to raising $6,000 to make our goal possible! All donations will go directly to the financing of food, decorations, and artistic performances that we need for the Día de Los Muertos Festival. In addition, all donations are tax-deductible. Thank you for your help!

$50

La Ofrenda

The ofrenda is often the most recognized symbol of Día de Los Muertos. This temporary altar is a way for families to honor their loved ones and provide them what they need on their journey. This donation will help pay for an altar as the centerpiece of our event.

$100

La Calavera

Calaveras are an important symbol in the Dia De Los Muertos festival and are traditionally made from sugar. The calaveritas de azucar are part of the ofrenda, and symbolize the “earth” element along with other foods like mole or pan de muerto. This donation will help pay for food to offer at our event!

$200

La Mariposa

Monarch butterflies play a role in Día de los Muertos because they are believed to hold the spirits of the departed. This belief stems from the fact that the first monarchs arrive in Mexico for the winter each fall on Nov. 1, which coincides with Día de Los Muertos.
