CONTAR HISTORIAS - TELLING STORIES
We are a diverse group of UT undergraduate and graduate students who have been tapping into the creative and practical potential of the Spanish language. We want to share a series of stories we crafted in courses we took at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and workshops led by award-winning writers from Latin America from 2019 to 2020. With your help, we would turn this project into a physical book!
Laura EsquivelOur book is tentatively titled CONTAR HISTORIAS. It is a collection that includes a wide array of voices. Each chapter is written by a student who shares a personal and sometimes very intimate experience. We write about the fortunes and misfortunes of migration, and the challenges we face as first-generation students at UT. We reflect on what it means to be at an ESL program at a public elementary school in Texas, and the obstacles our weak healthcare system presents to disadvantaged children with chronic health conditions. We also write about losing our hometown to climate change, about the eye-opening experience of traveling, the passion for sports, and the difficulties of seclusion during the pandemic.
Daniela ReaEven though we each wrote in solitude, the writing process was a collective experience. We read our stories out loud during class or workshops. We provided feedback, encouraged others to be vulnerable, and imagined the craft of writing as a shared endeavor.
Writing this book in Spanish makes it even more special since Spanish is not necessarily our first language. Most of us are either curious heritage speakers or non-native Spanish speakers eager to use creativity as a tool for improving our language skills. Writing in a second or third language is a challenge, but it isn’t a barrier.
