Who Are We?
Graduates for Underrepresented Minorites (GUM) is an organization founded to create a supportive community among graduate and postdocs from underrepresented groups. We strive to promote professional development, provide leadership, and give back through outreach in our Austin community.
Our Project
The GUM Annual Retreat is an event focused on improving the community and professional development of underrepresented minorities, particularly for graduate students although all are welcome. Due to the lack of representation and curbed support for underrepresented minorities, we believe that this event will draw significant attention to the cause and allow for students to interact and build a supportive network of students that have shared experiences as well as utilizing the event to gain professional development skills through speakers and targeted workshops. Last year's event had Dr. Loving and Dr. Walkes that gave fantastic talks on the experience of the underrepresented minorities in science, how to better support one another, and looking forward to where we are going that our organization whole heartedly identified with. Our career discussions with recent graduates also gave our members guidance on how to navigate the career search and identify career paths.

By donating $100, you help support the cost of event meals, community building activities, and professional development for a member of GUM.
Keynote and session speakers provide our organization me members with validation, growth opportunities, and support. By donating $300, we will be able to continue to provide these opportunities to our members.
We believe that an in-person event is unparalleled in providing our members with an immersive experience in building relationships, engaging in professional development, and validating their experience.
