"To increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community."
- NSBE Mission
About NSBE
The UT Austin chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers was founded in 1986 to provide Black students in the Cockrell School of Engineering an outlet to serve their community and gain access to a social network of like-minded individuals and professional opportunities to bolster their careers.
We Want to Ease the Financial Burden
Many incoming engineering students find themselves face-to-face with financial hardships. This financial debt poses a significant obstacle for students who, while eager to begin their engineering education, are apprehensive of placing such a large financial burden on their families, delaying enrollment and creating barriers to fully engage in their educational experience.
To ease the burden for incoming students, the UT NSBE team has created a fundraiser to support the Dr. Harovel Wheat Scholarship, named after esteemed UT Austin Black engineering alumna Harovel Wheat. This scholarship, once fully funded, will provide scholarships to students in the Cockrell School of Engineering, with first preference given to students participating in the National Society of Black Engineers.
About Dr. Wheat
Dr. Harovel Grays Wheat (Ph.D. ME 1985) became a research associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UT Austin upon her graduation. Wheat has received multiple awards for her brilliant research and leadership, including the Department of Mechanical Engineering Teaching Award, the Banks McLaurin Fellowship in Engineering and the Faculty Excellence Award in Mechanical Engineering. Wheat’s persistence and dedication has set an example for generations to come.
How do scholarships make an impact?
Pending debt hinders students’ ability to graduate on time, delaying full-time employment and a stable salary. In some cases, they may even withdraw entirely prior to graduation, resulting in fewer Texas Engineers working to make the world a better place.
As UT Austin’s NSBE Chapter, we are committed to partnering with the Cockrell School in their efforts to recruit a diverse group of top students who will enrich Texas Engineering and improve society through their time and talents.
Texas Engineering students have access to world-class facilities, award-winning faculty members, internationally acclaimed undergraduate programs and a global network of alumni who are shaping the world. As NSBE leaders, we want to provide NSBE students access to these incredible resources, empowering them to become future leaders.
We Need You
