Texas HBSA has committed to raising $5,000 for our Día De Los Muertos festival coming up on November 2nd! This project is an important way for us to extend our community to the broader UT student community, and we need YOUR help to do that! Please consider donating to our project to help support us on our road to the festival, or show your support by becoming an ambassador on the tabs above this description. Below we have outlined a little more of who we are and our project.
About Us
Hello! We are the Texas Hispanic Business Student Association at the University of Texas at Austin. Texas HBSA is committed to bringing out the best of its 180+ members and providing them with unparalleled professional and leadership opportunities. Through the numerous programs HBSA hosts throughout the year, including our signature events, Company Night and Scoring Careers, HBSA has helped increase the number of Hispanic/Latinx professionals entering the workforce. Additionally, we foster family and community within our organization to make sure that all our members feel included and have a strong support group that will support them throughout their careers.
Our Project
HBSA is excited to announce that our 4th Annual Día de Los Muertos Festival will be held on November 2nd, 2022! El Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated in remembrance of the dead and their passing to the afterlife. Family and friends gather at the memorials of their loved ones and build altars to pray at and honor. This celebration is not meant to be a somber one, but instead, a colorful festivity meant to attract the souls of the dead so they may hear the prayers of their loved ones. This holiday is celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November and is an important event for many people with Latinx/Hispanic backgrounds. Since an important aspect of Latinx/Hispanic culture is community, we have asked several other Latinx/Hispanic organizations on campus to help us with this event. The festival will be held at Greg Plaza, a central location on campus where students from different backgrounds can come to tour our many booths. There, they will be able to appreciate different aspects of Hispanic/Latinx culture, experience some of our beautiful customs, and get a taste of what being a part of our familia really means.
How can you help?
We are expecting to celebrate our culture with over 1,000 people from all different walks of life. We have committed to raising $5,000 to make our goal possible! All donations will go directly to the financing of food, decorations, and artistic performances that we need for the Día de Los Muertos Festival. We thank you for your support!
It is believed that the Aztecs worshipped a goddess of death that they alleged protected their departed loved ones, helping them into the next stages, La Catrina.
The ofrenda is often the most recognized symbol of Día de Los Muertos. This temporary altar is a way for families to honor their loved ones and provide them with what they need on their journey. This donation will help pay for an altar as the centerpiece of our event.
Calaveras is an important symbol in the Dia De Los Muertos festival and is traditionally made from sugar. The Calaveras de azucar are part of the ofrenda, and symbolize the “earth” element along with other foods like mole or pan de Muerto. This donation will help pay for food to offer at our event!
Monarch butterflies play a role in Día de Los Muertos because they are believed to hold the spirits of the departed. This belief stems from the fact that the first monarchs arrive in Mexico for the winter each fall on Nov. 1, which coincides with Día de Los Muertos.
Día de Los Muertos is not traditionally celebrated as a somber occasion, rather it is a celebration of art, music, and culture that remind us of the things that make us alive. Your donation has brought us much closer to sharing this with our community!
This event is extremely important for us to extend our community to the broader UT student campus, and a donation of this size would already get us halfway there! We are extremely excited to see all of your support and we invite you to join us at our festival so that we can celebrate you and your generosity :)
UNESCO declared the indigenous festivity to the dead as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
