HUMANITARIAN PRODUCT DESIGN:
This class is broken down into two semesters where students of all engineering majors work in groups to design prototypes for refugee camps, with the end goal of production. These projects are specifically designed and presented by our partners at the International Federation of The Red Cross (IFRC) to improve the health and safety of the community. Over the course of the two semesters, the projects are being constantly improved and modified until they are effective and efficient. Humanitarian Product Design needs funding in order to continue making prototypes that will supply refugee camps with technological advances. These prototypes rely purely on fundraising and out-of-pocket costs, so funds collected from Hornraiser are crucial to the success of our projects. TEAM LIGHTING: 90% of refugee camps across the globe have no access to light, inciting women to be harassed while walking at night, and students not being able to properly study after dark. Team Lighting aims to address this issue by creating handheld, solar powered, lighting devices that can be efficiently shipped in bulk that improves lighting conditions in the camp. These devices will be easily installable on latrines and common areas to provide light for these common areas during the entire night cycle and will recharge during the daylight sun. These lighting devices will provide year long aid for under the cost of a dollar, with instant installation.
TEAM PAD: In 2019, the United Nations reported that only 55% of girls in refugee camps had their menstrual needs met with the right sanitary products. Refugee women are subjected to using unsanitary products or none at all every month due to the expenses of transporting and the scarcity of the products. In order to provide a sense of relief and support, we have continued to develop a prototype that will make 3 sanitary pads at once. This machine will provide refugee women with a reliable and safe source of sanitary products while creating jobs in the camp.
TEAM BIODIGESTER: Team Biodigester aims to improve the design of an anaerobic biodigester to speed up human waste breakdown. Refugee camps often do not have adequate sanitation systems, and as a result, refugees are forced to live in unsanitary and dangerous conditions. Faster waste breakdown will help prevent illness and pathogens from spreading, as well as improve the living conditions in the camp. We are developing a biodigester that is efficient, cheap, and easy to operate.
