About Texas Wushu:

Who are We?

Texas Wushu is a recreational sports team at the University of Texas at Austin. Wushu is a contemporary version of traditional Chinese martial arts. Founded in the late 1800s as an attempt to preserve Chinese martial arts culture and give them a structured, public foundation for people to practice, wushu has been a staple of Chinese cultural exports and is practiced by more than a million people across the globe. In cinema, wushu has been popularized by many such as Bruce Lee, Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan, and other critically-acclaimed actors.

The passion for this project stems from the fact that many of our members are not only interested in Chinese martial arts, but hope to promote healthiness and a combat-adjacent sport that carry an ancient culture behind it. Wushu is not just a performance art, but a crystallization of Chinese martial tradition and contemporary movements that seek to benefit the practitioner through physical training and increased agility.

How will your contribution help?

With your help, we hope to achieve two main goals. The first of which is subsidizing members' trips to the World Star Chinese Martial Arts competition AND Collegiates, a national competition where we compete against other college wushu clubs around the country in the Spring of 2023. With the way competitions are organized, registration fees and air travel are a guaranteed cost barrier. However, we hope to send our entire team to World Star and Collegiates.

In Spring 2022, we were able to claim 36 medals from World Star Chinese Martial Arts Competition! Our 14 golds, 17 silvers, and 5 bronzes would not have been possible without your support. We hope to reach even greater heights this year at both competitions!

The second place the funds will be allocated towards is improving the equipment currently at hand. Primarily, weapons and uniforms necessary for demonstrations and competitions are the second cost barrier for many students, but with enough funds, we hope to introduce wushu silks and teach different uncommon forms of weapon combat.

Any donation will help our members purchase equipment and pay for competition fees are further their journey as wushu athletes. We ask that you please support our cause and shape the experience of this generation of Texas Wushu!

You can make a huge difference for Texas Wushu members with your donation!
