The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Concentration was created in 2018 and facilitates College of Natural Sciences students' exploration of DEI concepts through coursework and opportunities to develop skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a diverse world.
The DEI Concentration empowers students with terminology, critical thinking and empathy tools for engaging in productive conversations around difficult topics. Those who engage in the DEI Concentration have the opportunity to experience coursework and events centered around promoting dialogue and are guided through a variety of experiences aimed at exploring and expanding their understanding of complex ideas and issues. The goal of this credential is not to indicate mastery in these areas, but rather to demonstrate purposeful and thoughtful guided exploration and self-reflection around themes related to diversity and inclusion.
Students who have participated in the DEI concentration have shared that their experience has provided them with a safe space for self-reflection and dialogue, helped them to develop tools to build empathy and allowed them to leverage their experiences in job and internship interviews.
As Brianna Middleton, a 2022 Biochemistry, Sociology and Educational Psychology major shares, “I thoroughly enjoyed being able to acquire knowledge from the coursework and events to deepen my understanding of how to amplify the voices of the underserved, and the importance of using tools/resources to support those that are marginalized. These essential principles are necessary to build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive society.”
