Dr. Craig Champlin, following over 30 years of academic, research, and clinical success at the University of Texas at Austin, has retired. To honor Craig’s impressive legacy, the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences has created a scholarship fund to support Doctor of Audiology (AuD) students in their academic and clinical endeavors.
Craig’s list of achievements during his tenure as a professor of audiology and hearing science include serving as department chair for ten years, publishing over forty-six journal articles and several book chapters, and being honored with a multitude of awards. Beyond the university setting, Craig has served the field of audiology tirelessly, promoting and helping to implement the Newborn Hearing Screening program in Texas, serving as Vice President of Research and Academic Development for the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and acting as Editor for the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research. Craig’s leadership and mentorship has meant the world to his students. He has advised fifteen dissertations, fifty-six theses, forty-seven AuD research capstones, and sixty-seven undergraduate research projects. He is much beloved by his students, several of which now hold faculty positions in universities such as the University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State University.
While Craig’s accolades are inspiring, to say the least, who he is as a person is much more impressive. Craig always takes the time for his students, colleagues, and family. He is kind, supportive, and patient. His wisdom has sustained the audiology program in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, creating an atmosphere of support and encouragement among the faculty and students. His leadership of junior faculty is admirable and has helped to shape these academics in a powerful way.
In short, Dr. Craig Champlin will be greatly missed in his retirement. The legacy of his time working with us is something we will always remember, and this scholarship fund is a part of that. We sincerely thank you for your consideration in donating to this special cause.
