We made our goal! (and above and beyond!)

April 25, 2023

Virtual Cures fans & Supporters,

Thanks to you  - over 119% of our goal was reached - for a total of $11,945 !

We will now be able to fund our extra summer fellowships and send Jose to Boston to present his work.

We are ecstatic!

Our NDM-1 work moves forward into the summer as we will continue to make the variants and test their activity.

We are also excited about our new Virtual Cures Stickers!  (design by Libby!)

- if you swing by Dr. B's office - you are welcome to pick one up for yourself!

Super Thanks!    -  Dr. B and all of the student-researchers in the Virtual Cures Stream

Reaching the goal & beyond!

April 18, 2023

Virtual Cures fans & Supporters,

We are happy to announce that we have surpassed our original goal of $10,000 !

We could not have made it without the generous support of friends, family, alumni, and colleagues!

So THANK YOU!

Now, we are aiming for our STRETCH goal of $2,000 more, so that we can send one of our most hardworking TAs – Jose - to Boston in July to the Protein Society Annual Meeting to present his work on the project and fund a few micropublications of preliminary work (https://www.micropublication.org/). (Jose is on the right) and check out his video here

We only have until Friday at 9 AM!

Also, in recognition of all the donors above a certain amount, we have begun labeling lab equipment after you - as promised!  micropipettes and bubble spinners!

Last, but not least - we want to highlight some of our awesome FRI mentosr that lead the stream - starting with Valeria!   (see video below)

In the home stretch!

April 13, 2023

Virtual Cures supporters,

A big THANK YOU to all that have donated!  We are only 8% away from our original goal!

Check out some of our researchers sharing about their projects which they will present at the Undergraduate Research Forum tomorrow:

Making strides - Two (2) new Fellowships!

April 05, 2023

Virtual Cures supporters,

Oh my goodness!  We are making strides towards the finishing tape!

Due to your generosity - we have been able to fund 2 NEW SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS for this year!!

That means, because you recognized the value of undergraduates being able to dive deeply into science, 2 of our fortunate VDSers will be able to experience summer research!   To see what summer is like, check out this vlog by Quoc - who did research last summer.

A big THANK YOU to all that have donated!

We also had several students present at the Longhorn Research Poster session.

- Zoe and Isma
- Riddhi
- Lorena, Alexa, Jose, Humberto

Rounding the corner in the quest to fight antibiotic resistance!

March 31, 2023

Virtual Cures supporters,

A big THANK YOU to all that have donated!  We are at 38% and making great progress towards our goal.

This week, the FRI students are working on purification of their protein in lab while the ARI students are running SDS-PAGE gels to visualize yield and size. And, or course, doing a little virtual screening with GOLD as well.  Lots of team building and lots of science going on.

We also have a new protocol addition this semester - Virtual Reality (VR) goggles

- with funds from a mini-grant in the College of Natural Science and through BioMolViz (a network of faculty devoted to molecular visualization in the classroom) - we have purchased 3 headsets that each VDSer gets to train on this semester to visualize proteins in virtual reality.

Here are three of the mentors (Libby, Ryan, and Xander) experimenting with the Oculus Quest headsets. Then an image how they see a protein structure in the Nanome software - Pretty cool!
