Generous donors, Julie and Clay Edwards, have offered to match the first $5,000 in contributions! Don’t miss out on this opportunity to make double the impact.

What is the EVS Program?

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science degree program (the “EVS Program”) is an interdisciplinary degree program in Environmental Science offered collaboratively by The University of Texas at Austin’s College of Natural Sciences, Jackson School of Geosciences, and College of Liberal Arts. The EVS Program is unique for its innovative, interdisciplinary nature and its extensive use of hands-on experience and professional preparation to create tomorrow’s environmental scientists.

The EVS curriculum brings together four essential components to successful environmental education, making it unique both at The University of Texas at Austin and nationwide:

  • A Scientific Foundation
  • Hands-On Experience
  • Advanced Coursework
  • Professional Preparation

This interdisciplinary, hands-on education keeps students motivated to learn and grow, while simultaneously preparing them to address mounting environmental challenges.

Why Give?

Engaging in undergraduate research and fieldwork allows students to develop practical skills, such as data collection, analysis, and problem-solving, while also promoting collaboration, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the complexities of real-world applications of their academic pursuits. During the academic year 2022-23, the EVS program enrollment cap was raised to include more students interested in environmental science. This means additional needs such graduate teaching assistants and resources for field work and research will be required.

And the success of the program speaks for itself. From a spring 2021 survey, alumni responses reported:

  • 53.4% of graduates report a job in the EVS Field
  • 32.1% of graduates report a job adjacent to the EVS field

"Empowering the next generation of environmental geoscientists is not just a mission, but a shared responsibility to safeguard our planet's future. With every investment in our program, we nurture curiosity, cultivate expertise, and forge a path toward sustainable coexistence with the Earth. Together, we're not just shaping careers, but carving a legacy of stewardship for generations to come."

~Tim Shanahan, Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and the Director of the Environmental Science Program (Undergraduate Major)

Investing in the EVS Program is an investment in the future of our planet. As our program expands to accommodate a growing number of passionate students, the need for additional support becomes paramount. Your generosity ensures that we can provide essential resources for fieldwork, research, conference participation, and graduate teaching assistants. By contributing to our cause, you're not only supporting individual students but also contributing to a global mission of environmental stewardship. Together, we are fostering the skills, knowledge, and passion needed to address environmental challenges and secure a sustainable future. Join us in making a lasting impact and shaping a legacy of positive change for generations to come.

Thank you for supporting geoscientists of today and tomorrow!
