Stephen Martin
Stephen Martin joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin in 1974, where he currently holds the M. June and J. Virgil Waggoner Regents Chair in Chemistry. His research interests lie broadly in organic and bioorganic chemistry and chemical biology.
He has received a number of awards, including the NIH Career Development Award, an American Cyanamid Academic Award, the Alexander von Humboldt Prize, an Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, a Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science Award, a Wyeth Research Award, the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry Senior Award, and most recently the Ernest Guenther Award in the Chemistry of Natural Products (ACS), and most recently the Gund-Harrington Scholar Award; he is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
He was the regional editor of Tetrahedron for the Americas and Chairman of the Executive Board of Editors of Tetrahedron Publications. He has published over 350 scientific papers in primary journals together with several patents, reviews, and book articles. He is also co-author of the popular undergraduate laboratory book Experimental Organic Chemistry: A Miniscale and Microscale Approach.
In October 2018 he cofounded NuvoNuro, Inc., which is a neuroscience company based upon his research and that of leading neuroscientists across the country. Current efforts are focused on developing a non-opioid drug to treat chronic pain.
On the all too rare occasions that he is not engaged in professional activities, he enjoys music, travel, fly fishing, skiing, photography, wine, and being with his wife and daughter.
Stephen F. and Fay Evans Martin Endowed Chair in Chemistry
Friends, former students and colleagues of Stephen Martin have joined together to establish the Stephen F. and Fay Evans Martin Endowed Chair in Chemistry. This endowment will honor a man who has given so much of himself to the lives of his students and colleagues and will support, in perpetuity, the Department of Chemistry at The University of Texas at Austin.
Funds distributed annually from the Stephen F. and Fay Evans Martin Endowed Chair in Chemistry will be used to recruit and retain exceptional faculty in the Department of Chemistry. Endowed Chairs allow the College to grow the next generation of chemists by providing discretionary support for research seed grants, graduate student stipends and programmatic excellence.
Stephen will be fully retiring on August 31, 2024. Stephen's hope is to fully fund and establish his endowment before he retires. Stephen and Fay are offering a 2:1 match to raise the remaining $500,000 of the endowment.
