The Strive Grad Prep Academy--Strive GPA--widens the pathways to graduate and professional school for students. Launched in 2021, Strive offers undergraduates a wealth of resources and guidance as they prepare for postgraduate studies. Students step on campus already contemplating their lives after graduation. Strive's mission is to assist students with their career exploring and planning, helping them turn their contemplation into decision, and decision into action. Strive provides a range of services that promote positive progress towards the educational and professional goals students have set for themselves.
Through seminars, panel discussions, workshops, networking, and one-on-one counseling, Strive grows students' postgraduate education literacy. Strive covers the essentials that students need to submit competitive applications, from crafting CV's, resumes, and impactful statements of purpose, to evaluating academic experiences and building meaningful mentorships.
Students who take advantage of Strive's programming can get help creating an application timeline, and learn strategies for selecting programs that will be the best fits for them. Students can get advice on maintaining wellness and bulding community during their studies. They can get constructive feedback on their application materials. They can get guidance navigating and connecting with other campus resources collaborating with Strive. A core component of Strive's persistently supportive mission is providing financial assistance to students with an aim of removing costs and reducing barriers, especially for first-generation and Pell-eligible students.
For example, Strive's partnership with test-prep giant Kaplan offers no-cost courses (GRE, LSAT, MCAT) to hundreds of UT-Austin students. Last year alone, Strive saved students nearly $212,000 in prep course fees.
In addition to prep course enrollments, Strive works to remove other postgraduate education costs from as many students as possible, including test registration fees. Moving forward, we want to expand the types of financial supports Strive offers to cover even more expenses, like application fees, conference attendance and travel, professional membership dues, campus visits, and formal attire. Exam fees cost $200-300. Each submitted application can cost $100 or more. Professional membership dues cost, sometimes hundreds of dollars annually. Business attire, for interviews and other networking events, can cost even more. Sharing research at a conference is expensive; factoring in registration, flights, lodging, meals, and transportation, it can easily top $1,000.
