What is the Research Traineeship Experience (RTX)?

The RTX is a paid opportunity for STEM undergraduates and recent graduates to gain technical skills, get involved in geoscience research and develop their own educational and professional goals.

The 9-week program designed for undergraduates and recent graduates offers a valuable opportunity for participants to engage in research experiences and enhance their skills, fostering interaction between Jackson School of Geosciences faculty, researchers, students with various academic backgrounds and life experiences.

The program establishes, connects, and cultivates a cohort of students with potential to excel as outstanding graduate students. The program not only enhances the collaborative and dynamic nature of the graduate student body but also plays a crucial role in nurturing the future leaders of the geosciences field. It also prepare these individuals for impactful contributions in various sectors, including research, industry, and beyond, fostering a new generation of geoscience leaders.

RTX is the reason why I want to not only go to graduate school but go and pursue a minor in geoscience.”

~RTX 2022 participant

Participant goals include:

  • Increased sense of belonging in STEM and geoscience
  • Greater confidence in graduate school readiness, workforce qualifications and ability to do research
  • Interest in doing research
  • Interest in geoscience
  • Connection with GeoFORCE alumni

Participants:

51% of RTX participants are geoscience majors

RTX Outcomes and Impact

◆Since 2020, 81 undergraduates and post-baccalaureate students have participated in the RTX

◆Two RTX Alumni are now JSG graduate students, and more students will apply each year.

◆Other program alumni are completing their Bachelors degrees, participating in the STEM workforce, and pursuing graduate degrees at other universities, often with the support of their JSG RTX mentors along the way.

Why we need your support

Investing in the RTX Program is more than providing funding for a single summer; it's about helping to shape the future of STEM education and geosciences. As our program grows with the enthusiasm of applicants, we need more support. There are more students across the country looking for opportunities than there are spaces available in existing programs. The breadth of topics and societal relevance of the research being done at the Jackson School of Geosciences provides opportunities to talented students that no other university can.

Your generous donation is crucial to our mission. It helps provide important resources like mentoring, research opportunities, and participation in conferences. Together, we are creating a lasting impact in the field of geosciences and for STEM students. Your support isn't just an investment; it's a lasting symbol of positive change and endless possibilities.

“The skills I learned through the workshops and conducting research helped me immeasurably, as I felt infinitely more prepared to get involved in research at my home university, both for my senior thesis and my postgraduate appointment as a researcher with my thesis advisor. The knowledge I gained about geophysics through RTX sparked a genuine passion which I carried through my subsequent coursework—work which only reinforced my passion for topics in structural geology and planetary geophysics. I would have ordinarily felt lost in those rigorous classes, as I used to be quite intimidated by physics, but having hands-on experience in a geomechanics lab before the semester allowed me to apply my direct experience to the abstract concepts I was learning, and I excelled in my studies as a result. I'm extremely grateful for my participation in RTX, as I feel it helped to solidify my passions in the geosciences and to establish the foundations of my future in research.”
