Texas Judo: Who we are, what we need, and how you can help us!

We are Texas Judo, the only Judo club here at the University of Texas at Austin. We are fundraising this year, seeking donations from generous donors like you in the community we love, to keep our club the best place for accessible, safe, low-cost Judo!

Judo is an unarmed martial art and grappling sport, originating in Japan and centering around the concepts of maximum efficiency and mutual benefit and welfare. The sport’s primary movements are throws, sweeps, pins, and chokes, with the primary philosophy centered around achieving these movements with minimal effort, limiting harm to one’s opponents, and respecting both opponents and fellow practitioners of Judo.

Our club is one of the only martial arts clubs here at the University of Texas whose membership fees are under $100. We do this so that our club is easily accessible to new members who are just starting their learning. We want as many people to feel welcome to practice Judo as possible, and keeping our fees low is one way we accomplish that. Furthermore, we pride ourselves in historically paying for our members' tournament registration, travel, medical supplies, and lodging so our members can focus on performing their best on the mat.

By keeping our costs low, we can attract all sorts of members whose goals range from keeping fit, returning to Judo after a hiatus, stress relief, competing in tournaments, or just making friends. We strive to make our club an affordable, accessible, and accepting community of Judoka.

However, this comes at a cost. But, a cost you can help us with!

Every cent of your generous donation will go directly toward building a nurturing environment that grows our members into talented, thoughtful, skilled Judoka, and taking them to tournaments to compete. Our previous HornRaiser surpassed its goal and has helped us bring our members to many tournaments where they have competed, shown their spirit, and won. Nothing would make us happier than if you could help us surpass our goal again, so we can have another excellent year of tournament attendance and membership growth!

By donating, you'll increase our ability to provide access to high-level competitions (including pricey tournament registration fees and travel-related expenses like gas and lodging), purchase necessary practice and sanitation equipment (like mops, cleaning fluid, first-aid supplies, and grappling dummies, and keep our dedicated, tight-knit community of Judoka going!

Thank you for your generous donation and Hook 'Em!

$25

O-soto-gari

Many of our members, including valued alumni Karim Nader and Edward Espinoza, regard this as their favorite throw. At the $25 mark, we want to commemorate the throw that many of us know and love. It is a throw taught to beginners, but which also makes incredible appearances at higher levels of Judo.

$50

O-goshi

Translated to "major/large hip throw" this is one of the first throws a Judoka will learn and even effective at high levels. Its stability, power, and foundation is some of the best in all throws, and we would like to dedicate this level to our alumnus and former coach, Chris Trieu

$75

Tai-otoshi

Translated to "body drop", Tai-otoshi represents the grace and technique of Judo. Widely used by Olympic level Judoka due to its reliability and versatility, we would like to commemorate this level to our former president Omar Melhelm.

$100

Seoi-nage

This tier is in honor of Matt Machado, former president and current baller. Called "shoulder throw" in English, this throw is one of the most widely seen in both Judo and pop culture. Traditional Seoi-nage implies a "morote" (double arm) grip, but variations include "ippon" (single arm) and "eri" (collar).

$150

Ouchi-gari

Known as "major inner reap", Ouchi-gari is a fundamental sweep that every Judoka should know. Vital for setting up combos and finishing them, we would like to dedicate this level to our former sensei, Tim Webb. Just like this throw, he was, and still is, vital to all aspects of our club
