For students in the Jackson School of Geosciences, getting out and into the field for hands-on research are core components of the curriculum — and crucial to their ability to learn the skills and techniques needed to solve the world’s most complex problems.
Field camps offer students the chance to apply classroom knowledge to real-world geological settings, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and professional development. While other universities with earth science programs have scaled back field offerings, we have ramped ours up, requiring additional resources to meet programmatic needs. While there was once only one GEO 660 field camp group, there are now three course groups due to an increase in student demand.
While field camp costs have gone up across the board, student fees have remained the same, creating a program funding gap. Many students also do not have the resources to purchase the necessary personal field basics, such as project tools, appropriate footwear, weather appropriate outdoor gear, and camping equipment.
Funding enables the Jackson School to provide necessary resources and equipment for field expeditions, not limited to but including:
When you give to the GEO 660 field camp, you encourage the next generation of geoscience leaders to take what they’ve learned in the classroom and put it into practice in the real world… and solve real-world problems.
Thank you for supporting the geoscientists of today and tomorrow!
