B.E.S.O's Mission
The Bilingual Education Student Organization (BESO) has an array of exciting projects planned for the 2024-2025 school year, focused on fostering community and collaboration among bilingual education advocates. One key initiative is attending the Texas Association for Bilingual Educators (TABE) conference in Round Rock, which offers invaluable networking and professional development opportunities for our members.
To cultivate a sense of community, BESO organizes social gatherings that help build a home-away-from-home atmosphere among our members. In addition, we also want to connect with nearby bilingual schools. These events facilitate collaboration and support, enhancing our collective advocacy efforts for bilingual education. Ultimately, we aim to expand our outreach and serve more schools, programs, and students, ensuring that every child has access to quality bilingual education and support.
BESO was established in 1979 by Dr. Ellen Clark at The University of Texas at Austin, where it began its mission to support bilingual education and advocate for the needs of bilingual students. Over the years, BESO expanded to The University of Texas at San Antonio and gradually spread to various universities across Texas, creating a network of students dedicated to promoting bilingual education. In 2000, the national BESO initiative began to formalize, stemming from an organic movement among individual groups that convened at the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) and the Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) conferences. Today, BESO boasts a vibrant community of over 1,000 members and alumni across the United States, representing diverse states, school districts, governmental offices, and universities, all united in their commitment to bilingual education and advocacy.
Your contribution matters so we can bring our projects to fruition and create meaningful opportunities for our members and the communities we serve. Your donation will significantly increase our capacity to attend professional development events like the TABE conference, support low-income schools, and organize engaging social gatherings. These resources will empower us to teach, inspire, and enrich each other, fostering a strong network of bilingual education advocates dedicated to positively impacting the lives of students and educators alike.
With your support, we can continue to expand our outreach and enhance the quality of bilingual education in our communities.
