We have incredible news—thanks to your overwhelming generosity, we’ve reached our initial fundraising goal for the Medical Spanish program! We are beyond grateful for your support, which has already made a huge impact on our journey.
Because of your support, Lauren and I have been able to focus on our studies and make remarkable progress. Because of you, we’ll be able to begin providing medical care in Spanish far sooner than we ever imagined. Because of you, our impact will extend beyond Austin to profoundly underserved families in Guatemala. Because of you, we will deepen our cultural knowledge to better serve our Central American patients here in the U.S.
Best of all, because of you, next year’s students will have even more resources to pursue this dream.
In light of this progress and the continued interest in our campaign, we’ve set a new reach goal of $14,000. This additional funding will allow us to:
We cannot thank you enough. Your support has not only buoyed our project but also lifted our spirits. We are incredibly passionate about this work, and your generosity is making it happen.
All the best,
Lauren and Alia
We are writing today with immense gratitude for your incredible support of our Medical Spanish program. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve reached 94% of our fundraising goal—an amazing milestone! We are so close to achieving our goal, and with just one day left, we would love to share an update on what your contributions have helped us accomplish and how you can still make an impact.
Thanks to supporters like you, we have been able to focus more on our studies and less on financial worries. As a result, we’ve made remarkable progress with our Spanish proficiency—so much so that our teachers believe we’ll be very close to the required general Spanish level by the end of this month. This rapid progress has been a game-changer.
Encouraged by our teachers, we’re now preparing to take an unexpected big step: training at Pop Wuj, a language school in Guatemala that funds various community projects, including a free clinic. Nearly one-third of the tuition goes directly to the clinic, helping provide care to underserved communities, while the rest supports other community projects and staff. This program is more cost-effective than our current option and allows us to grow both culturally and clinically while delivering direct medical care. You can read more about the specific program we would participate in here. We want to maximize the impact of your donations, and we believe this is both best for the program and also good financial stewardship.
Your support is also paving the way for future students. We’re thrilled to report that we’ve secured a meeting with the Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education to discuss the future of this program.
Your generosity and belief in this mission mean the world to us. Together, we are making a real difference—not only for the communities we’ll serve but also for the future of medical education.
Thank you again for being part of this journey. We'll be sure to keep you updated on our progress!
The cost of the bus ticket from the Mexico City Airport to Puebla.
Many of our host families buy food at the open-air markets around Puebla. $50 covers a trip to the market together to buy ingredients for our meals.
Each day in Puebla for room, board, books and supplies, and private instruction costs $75. Each day is also one day closer to Spanish fluency and better patient care. Help us stay in Puebla for one more precious day!
During the year we take six nationally-standardized language proficiency tests (ACTFL OPI) to mark our progress, validate our program, and certify us to work with patients. Each test is $165.
This level will pay for the entire program (room, board, and tuition) for one student.
This level covers the entire program for two students as well as a scholarship for the next cohort.
