We are building a house! But not just any house…
Nexushaus is a 850 square foot, solar-powered house designed and built by students from the University of Texas at Austin (UT) and the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) competing in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. The Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition that showcases the application of solar technologies and sustainable building practices in residential houses. The selection process for this prestigious event is highly competitive, and the UT-TUM team is one of only seventeen teams (out of over 150 applicants) chosen to compete in October 2015 at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California.
As the only school selected from the state of Texas for the 2015 competition, UT Austin is honored and proud to represent our state and city as we compete in the 10 categories of the competition. These categories are: Architecture, Market Appeal, Engineering, Appliances, Affordability, Comfort Zone, Hot Water Usage, Communication, Home Energy, and Energy Balance.
The money raised through this effort will cover the cost of filming and producing a "making-of" documentary which will document the construction and water, energy, and food technologies explored in the project. The documentary will be used during the competition as part of the Communication and Engineering competitions and will also act as a teaching tool in classrooms across Texas once the competition is complete.
In addition to acting as an impetus for education, the house will also serve a purpose when it returns to Austin at the end of the competition. The house will then become an Accessory Dwelling Unit within the existing neighborhood fabric of East Austin through the Alley Flat Initiative, a collaborative co-managed by The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Sustainable Development and the Austin Community Design and Development Center.
We only have 45 days to raise $10,000, which will then be matched by a generous donor.
We appreciate your consideration, and hope you will join us on this exciting journey as we build our house and change the world!
Thank you (and hook 'em horns!),
UT + TUM Students
