John Murphy Endowed Scholarship

Opportunity to Honor a Wonderful Teacher and Mentor

In April 2017, Dr. John Murphy was inducted into the American Advertising Federation Southwest Division Hall of Fame, and shortly after, he was named one of the ten best educators by Alcalde magazine for 2017. These tremendous honors are the most recent of the 19 awards he has received throughout his career.

During the fall of 2017, students, friends, colleagues, and family of John Murphy have the opportunity to be part of establishing an endowed scholarship in his honor. The John Murphy Endowed Scholarship will be a lasting tribute to a wonderful teacher and mentor, and it will award annual scholarships to seniors in the Stan Richards School of Advertising & Public Relations that have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership. John Murphy's passion has always been supporting students, and this scholarship will continue that legacy in perpetuity.

About John Murphy

Known for his passion for teaching, commitment to excellence, and ability to create "light bulb moments" for students, John Murphy has been a guiding force at The University of Texas at Austin for decades. Although he retired from classroom teaching in 2015, he continues to work with UT students in the AAF student chapter. He also serves as Program Coordinator of the AAF/UT Vance and Betty Lee Stickell Student Internship Program and is involved in a wide range of other initiatives through his leadership as Director of Special Programs at the Stan Richards School of Advertising & Public Relations. You can read more about John Murphy, see a tribute to the 12 AAF competition teams he coached, and view a photo gallery of many former students who won the 318J project by visiting his faculty page

Reflections from Former Students

"He started my love for advertising."

"It was the sheer force of Dr. Murphy's personality that made the greatest impact. He demanded I be better. He insisted I work harder. He pushed. He prodded. He simply made me think and grind harder than I ever had before."

"He's a special man, and I am fortunate to have known him."
