Founded in 1980, Texas Ballroom is one of UT Austin’s few ballroom dancesport organizations. We hold weekly classes throughout the school year where we teach students, faculty, and staff many styles of dance that include ballroom, social and country. We strive to create as many opportunities as possible to meet the needs of our members, from weekly socials, to monthly variety dances, to larger events like our annual gala or collegiate ballroom competition.
In 2013, Texas Ballroom revived the Ballroom Competition Team. Over the course of that year, the team experienced immense growth, allowing a second team to be created - the Country Competition Team. Both teams compete at national level competitions across the country where many of our team members receive high recognition and marks.
We are excited to have multiple members qualify for Worlds this semester. After working hard throughout the semester, they will represent UT and demonstrate their skills and techniques on a large stage. We have 11 members traveling to San Francisco on January 1-8. Among these 11 members, there are three World Titles from last year's competition and we are returning to win them again.
We will be sending 12 members to Massachusetts to compete at MIT's collegiate competition in April. MIT's event is the largest collegiate ballroom competition on the East Coast, attracting competitors from all over and allows our members to showcase their skills.
Hosted by Texas Ballroom, Austin Open is the largest collegiate level dance competition in the state. Austin Open encourages dancers of all levels to experience competition, enhance their skills, and publicize the art of dance to the community. Independent dancers, dancers from local studios, and collegiate teams across the state which include SMU, A & M, Rice, and Texas Tech travel to compete at Austin Open.
