What is SURE Walk?
SURE (Students United for Rape Elimination) Walk is an agency of Student Government that, through collaboration with Parking and Transportation Services (PTS), provides non-judgmental late-night transportation across campus and into West and North Campus. Founded in 1982, SURE Walk has continued to embody the motto “Longhorns care for one another” for 35 years. SURE Walk is a free service available to all students, faculty, and staff in the UT community. The agency exists to provide student voice and ownership in the program - to provide students with a service that works for them and is directly accountable to their needs and concerns. First and foremost, SURE Walk exists to make all Longhorns feel safer on and around their campus.
Our Message:
SURE Walk was originally created with the intention of eliminating rape occurrences while students walk home at night by providing students with other students to accompany them on their walk. Since its creation, new data on sexual assault has indicated that many sexual assaults happen within the confines of the home and by someone the survivor knows. With this in mind, SURE Walk’s purpose has been expanded to include education on sexual assault in addition to providing escorts and rides to reduce the risks students face. With both of these strategies, SURE Walk hopes to help eliminate sexual assault at UT.
Our Goal:
SURE Walk’s usage over the last two years has skyrocketed, jumping from 3,279 fulfilled requests in the fall of 2016 to 12,283 calls in the spring of 2017. SURE Walk’s goal is to build upon the agency for the future to ensure that SURE Walk can serve the needs of a growing campus. Although SURE Walk has been hugely successful thus far, it is lacking in certain areas. Limited resources restrict the reach of the service and contribute to slower-than-desired response times. We want to be able to offer a walk or ride to every student who needs one, and we want our messages about preventing sexual assault to be spread across campus, but we need your help! We are trying to raise money for two golf carts so that we are better able to serve the University of Texas campus. Any donation amount will be greatly appreciated and will help expand the SURE Walk service, thereby creating a safer, more knowledgeable campus.
Your donation will pay for 100 rides for 100 students to return home safely!
Your donation will pay for a wheel on one of our new golf carts, rolling over 10 miles with students each night!
Your donation will pay for the roof of a new golf cart, protecting students from the elements on their way home! At this level, we’ll put a name of your choice on the roof of a new golf cart.
Your donation will pay for maintenance costs for the life of one of the new golf carts! Your name will be written on the roof of one of our golf carts.
Your donation will pay for over half of a new golf cart, and we’ll put a star with a name of your choice on the exterior of a golf cart as a thank you!
Your donation will pay for an entire new golf cart, allowing us to ensure over 3,000 students get home safely each year! As a show of gratitude, we will put a name of your choice across the front of the golf cart!
Your donation meets our entire goal and will allow SURE Walk to increase our capacity by over 33%, serving over 5,000 new students in addition to the over 15,000 students we currently serve each semester! For such an extraordinary donation, we will write a name or names of your choice across the front of both golf carts.
