Little Longhorns Gardens

For almost 10 years, the University of Texas Elementary School (UTES) has had school gardens that we are used as an outdoor classroom for the students. Unfortunately, during recent construction, all of our gardens were removed.

We need your help to build a new garden!

School gardens offer students a variety of proven educational benefits. Garden-based lessons appeal to the variety of learning styles and intelligences, lead to greater concept connection because of hands-on experience and offer students a variety of activities to increase healthy life habits.

The school currently has an under-utilized space at the corner of East 6th and Robert T. Martinez. Located at our main entrance, this area was formerly a playground, but now it isn't used during recess and would make a perfect, safe place for our gardens. It is our dream to install accessible raised bed gardens and a seated area for outdoor work.

This effort is being led by Ms. Vore, our Wellness teacher. Based on what she has accomplished in the UTES gardens over the years, Ms. Vore plans to have the students grow vegetables that can be prepared in our kitchen for students, given to families in need and herbs will specifically be grown to be sold at a local farmers market or to a nearby restaurant to help generate funds to buy seeds or plants for the next growing season.

$50

A donation of $50 will support the cost of 1 cubic yard of soil for the garden

$100

Kindergarten

With $100, we could buy enough starter tomato plants to grow 200 tomatoes!

We have to water the plants, especially during the summer. A gift of $500 will buy the automated drip system for our plants.

It is our dream to purchase tables and chairs so the students may sit outside in our outdoor classroom. A classroom set of furniture is $2,500.
