Giving Tuesday is almost here!

November 30, 2020

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday! People all around the world will support the causes they care about and help make the world a better place. If you've already donated, we would greatly appreciate if you took a moment to share our project on social media, or tell a friend or family member about our mission.

As a reminder, The Cranes Project aims to set up a space for collective grief, allowing Texans to reflect on loved ones lost to COVID-19. To create this space for reflection, we are collecting origami cranes from the Texas area to make a public art installation that will be displayed both physically and digitally in summer 2021. In order to complete this project, we need to meet our fundraising goal of $75,000. All donations will go toward building the installation, paying artists involved, and maintaining operations within our workforce. All donations are tax-deductible through the University of Texas at Austin, a 170(c)(1) organization.

Right now, we're focusing all our efforts on fundraising and collecting origami cranes. We'll be hosting crane-folding sessions over Zoom to offer assistance and an online place to gather and discuss our project.

Thank you for all your support!

We're On Our Way!

November 24, 2020

We are currently at 39% of our total fundraising goal! Thank you to everyone who has donated since our last update. We see you and we appreciate your amazing support!

In this last week, we've continued to grow our presence on social media as well as welcoming two new staff members: Joanna and Victoria! Joanna will help us create a PR strategy to spread the word about our project and Victoria will manage outreach to hospitals and other care centers.

If you've already donated and are looking for more ways to help, consider sending in a crane or sharing our project on social media. For more information on how to fold a crane and send it in, click here.

Gaining Momentum!

November 14, 2020

First, we'd like to thank everyone who has supported us on social media! We're happy to announce that, within the first two days of launching on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, we had more than 500 followers across all platforms. We're hoping to carry this same momentum through the rest of the year as we move forward in our endeavors. Please make sure to check out our pages and give us a follow if you haven't yet!

We would also like to celebrate the progress we've made so far in collecting donations! We believe this is only an inkling of what's to come as more people learn about our project and goals. If you can, share this project with your families and friends to help us meet our fundraising goal!

If you have already donated and are looking for other ways to get involved, you can send us a crane of your own at this address:

PO BOX 300999 Austin, TX 78703

$3

Donate a Crane

With this donation, you'll be able to donate and preserve one paper crane in honor of a loved one.

$6

Connect

With this donation, you will have helped purchase threads linking one crane with another in the memorial. During this time of social isolation, your donation will help connect one memory of a loved one with another.

$21

Origami

There are roughly 21 folds in a paper crane. This donation is equivalent to seven donated preserved cranes-- seven commemorated memories of a loved one(s).

$100

Reflection

This donation helps purchase materials constructing the reflection benches surrounding the memorial. We hope that these reflection benches will be a place of community in remembrance of lives lost.

$1,000

Senbazuru

The legend of the 1000 paper cranes promises that anyone who folds "senbazuru" (a thousand origami cranes) will be granted a wish by the gods. The wish usually pertains to recovery and healing.

$2,020

Remembrance

In memory of all those who passed and their healing families.

$25,000

Golden Crane

Today, at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, there stands a statue of Sadako hold up a golden crane, under which lies the inscription "This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world." This tier funds half of the entire project.
