Send the UT PetroBowl Team to Compete in Dubai

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition

What is Petrobowl?

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) PetroBowl competition pitches SPE student chapter teams against each other in a series of quick-fire rounds, answering technical and non-technical industry-related questions. The contest has grown in size and popularity since its debut in 2002, and in 2015 was taken global with the introduction of six regional qualifier contests.  The best 36 teams are invited to the PetroBowl championship at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), which will take place this year September 26-28, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  The University of Texas has consistently shown a strong presence at PetroBowl since its inception in 2002 with first place victories in 2009 and 2011 and second place victories in 2013 and 2015.

How do we prepare for PetroBowl?

While the PetroBowl tournaments are only two days a year, preparation is a year-long endeavor.  During the school year, our team practices at least once a week and often seeks the assistance of professors to both write practice questions and challenge us in mock-games.  Outside of meetings, we rigorously study volumes of information ranging from the technical (Drilling, Petrophysics, Geomechanics) to the historical (Daniel Yergin's The Prize, SPE chronology, and famous oilmen).

Why do we need your support?

Supporting our PetroBowl team provides an invaluable cultural and educational experience for us as students. We will not only be competing, but also attending the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. While abroad in Dubai, we will have the opportunity to meet international experts in the oil and gas industry, learn about local culture, and represent the UT PGE Department on a global scale.  Due to the international venue, transportation and lodging costs are much greater this year than in years past.  Your donation will go a long way towards helping us achieve victory in Dubai and bringing home another first place trophy!  We continue to study our material in preparation for a strong performance, and greatly appreciate your help in getting us there!
