Founded in 2010, the Black Queer Studies Collection at UT Libraries contains nearly 1,000 items that center Black Queer and Trans experiences. The collection includes fiction, poetry, memoirs, comics, feature films, documentaries, scholarship, art exhibition catalogs, zines, and anthologies. Hybrid in format, the collection contains physical books, as well as online materials like ebooks and streaming films and spotlights the work of Black Queer and Trans authors, artists, and filmmakers.
As we look to expand the collection and engage with students and faculty to grow Black Queer Studies at UT, we hope to raise $25,000 to establish the Black Queer Studies Collection Enhancement Fund.
By contributing today, you will help secure a vibrant future for the Black Queer Studies Collection!
While the Black Queer Studies Collection is widely used by students and researchers, funding has plateaued over the past decade. Increased popularity of the collection has made it difficult to keep up with demand for resources, especially given the steady rise in the cost of research materials.
Through the creation of the Black Queer Studies Collection Enhancement Fund, our ability to expand the scope of the collection and award students for their work would increase in perpetuity. One of our primary goals is to create a Student Research Prize to award funding to 2-3 students a year who accomplish exemplary work in the field of Black Queer Studies by utilizing books and media from the collection. We have an opportunity to promote and make visible the scholarly research of UT students and faculty working in this growing area of study.
With your generosity, we can seize this opportunity.
The Black Queer Studies Collection is more than 10 years old and contains nearly 1,000 items, but we have room to grow. With the creation of the LGBTQ+ and Black Studies programs at UT, the need for a premiere collection in Black Queer Studies is integral to the success of students. And students use the books in this collection –– the average physical book circulates more than 20 times! That’s more than 17,000 total library loans. This collection is well-loved and well-used!
By contributing to our campaign, we can grow this beloved collection to reach more students, while also encouraging their development as scholars through our inaugural Student Research Prize. Help the Libraries bring Black Queer and Trans voices from the margins to the center through this groundbreaking collection!
