Projects With Underserved Communities Team Jamaica 2024
We are Projects with Underserved Communities (PUC) Team Jamaica 2023-2024! Our group comprises of seven undergraduate students from the Cockrell School of Engineering and the Steve Hicks School of Social Work. We aim to design and construct a second staircase for Woodford Primary and Infant School in Kingston, Jamaica, as the second floor only has one exit and continues to fail inspections from the fire department.
UNDERSTANDING THE MAIN IDEA OF THE PROJECT!
In May 2024 our team will travel to Kingston, Jamaica, and with the help of the United Way of Jamaica and our technical advisors, we will build a second staircase as a new way of egress at Woodford Primary and Infant School.
The implementation of a second staircase will help the school pass its fire inspections and ensure that children can exit safely in an emergency.

Throughout the fall and spring semester, our team will be working on designing and fundraising for the staircase. We will consult with UWJ, Woodford Primary, and our technical advisors to ensure that the staircase fits the school's needs and will be structurally sound. During the project implementation in May, we will help with construction alongside our contractor and skilled laborers. Our team will strive to create and implement a sustainable design as this project will impact future generations of students that attend Woodford Primary.
OUR PARTNERS
We are excited to announce that this is PUC's first time going to Jamaica, and therefore, PUC's first partnership with the non-profit organization United Way of Jamaica (UWJ). UWJ's mission is to "mobilize resources to transform lives throughout Jamaica." Helping Woodford Primary build a new staircase aligns with UWJ's principal pillars of education, health, and sustainability.
Throughout the year we will be in contact with UWJ, the principal of Woodford Primary, our contractor, and our technical advisors (professional engineers on PUC's advisory board) in order to ensure that the project is sustainable and has a positive impact.

Building a second staircase at the school will increase safe evacuation in an emergency.
This is the amount of money that we need for our project. :)
